The two-year war between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray officially ended early Tuesday morning, as Toshiba sign the white flag and said it would cease production of HD-DVD products.
The company, which since the sale of HD-DVD in March 2006, with the HD-A1 player, “it was decided not fair for us to continue with a small presence,” said Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida. The Blu-ray format is now the final winner of the war and is widely regarded as a substitute for DVD optical media.
Toshiba geht’s press release in a bit more detail: “Toshiba is the reduction of movements of the HD-DVD player and recorder to the retail channel, with the goal of hiring for companies by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end production series of HD DVD players for applications such as PC games and at the same time, is still continuing efforts to meet the needs of customers. The company will continue to monitor the position of the laptop equipped HD-DVD players in the entire PC business in relation to the future demand of the market. ”
Three movie studios currently support HD-DVD - Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation - but we expect that they proclaim to follow and support of the Blu-ray rather sooner than later.
